Introduction to Motivational Interviewing Core Course

Recommended Introductory Course

This 2-day, 10-hour, interactive skills training introduces trainees to the MI Spirit, core skills, and processes and provides opportunities for skill development and practice.

This core course is what I recommend for prospective trainees who not only want to understand what motivational interviewing is, but also want to develop some skills in delivering motivational interviewing.

NC DHHS DMHDDSAS Required 13-hour Motivational Interviewing Training

The state of North Carolina requires certain staff providing State-Funded Enhanced Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to have completed 13 hours of introductory Motivational Interviewing training provided by a member of MINT. This training fulfills this requirement and can be tailored to your agency's needs. This learning experience is highly interactive and can be delivered in person or virtually.

About Motivational Interviewing Brief overview

For trainings under 6 hours, participants can expect to learn about what motivational interviewing is, the core components, and how it can be used, but should not expect to develop skills in such a brief session. This type of training is excellent for organizations that are interested in further training, but need to build buy-in.

Brief Introduction to interviewing

This one-day, 5-6 hour training is an abbreviated, interactive introduction to the MI spirit, core skills, and processes with some skills practice. Level of skill attainment following this training will be significantly lower than what is achieved in the 2-day Core Course.

Advancing your Practice

Requires prior training

This intermediate to advanced course will take learners to a higher level of understanding and practice in MI through highly interactive nuanced exploration of concepts and practice. Learners will have their practice coded and receive detailed feedback regarding their practice.

Coding and Feedback

Research shows that one of the most effective ways to improve MI practice and fidelty is through coded practice and feedback. Learners will record samples of themselves conducting conversations using MI which will be coded using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) tool. Coding will be individually reviewed with participants and constructive feedback will be provided.

Ongoing skill Maintenance Sessions

Research shows that without intentional, ongoing practice and/or training, MI skills atrophy in less than a year. These brief, periodic sessions (1-2 hours, every 1-2 months) provide opportunities for your group to meet with a trainer for skill maintenance and enhancement exercises as well as opportunities to staff cases in an MI context.

Individual Coaching

1:1 MI mentorship with coding, feedback, and customized teaching to advance your practice and understanding. Available on an hourly basis.
